Standing upon what used to be the San Martín convent, first one in Madrid and demolished in 1836, this building erected in 1870 is a vibrant example of the architecture from the second half of the 19th century. It took the place of what use to be the headquarters of Monte de Piedad charitable house and was built by José María Aguilar and Fernando Arbós y Tremanti –builder of other renown venues of the city such as La Casa Encendida cultural centre or the Panteón de los Hombres Ilustres mausoleum–. The name Casa de las Alhajas (Jewelry House) has to do with the many jewels that, for years, have been pawned and auctioned within the building owned by the MonteMadrid Foundation.
